What is Documentary Wedding Photography?

Documentary wedding photography is a term that has been adopted by many wedding photographers over the last few years. The idea is that a documentary wedding photographer is all natural. It’s unposed, candid and raw. Unfortunately, many photographers that have adopted this title don’t quite follow the rules and many are do posed photographs “looking longingly into the eyes of your new wife/husband”.

The words “can you do that again?” or “now just have a little nose rub” will never leave my mouth that’s for sure.

Some people actually describe it as street photography at weddings. Which actually is pretty good. The whole idea behind street photography is to capture the moments, the life, the energy and most importantly…the story.

I love documentary wedding photography for those reasons above. As someone who really feels the moment and becomes emotionally involved at each wedding, I find that the natural style of photography portrays this in all its glory, allowing the viewer to feel the emotions of the photographs too.

Here are a few documentary photographs to give you an idea of what i’m talking about.
